Abstract of paper No. 40
Title: VIRTUAL PROJECT IN LEICA VIRTUAL EXPLORER
Author(s): Pánek, J.
Text:

The aim of my bachelor thesis was to create a virtual project of Microregion Hranicko and to make an analysis of all software enable to work with virtual reality to make a virtual project. Part of my thesis was also to sum up possibilities of Leica Virtual Explorer (LVE) for generation of thematic virtual project/virtual GIS/3D GIS. The work is focused on utilization of 3D GIS for propagation and presentation of different villages and areas of Microregion Hranicko in field of tourism. In my thesis I presented possibilities of Leica Virtual Explorer for creating 3D maps, its strong and weak sites for current virtual cartography, usage of LVE, ways of future develop 3D GIS, etc. All used data has been gathered within project STRA.S.S.E, most of them are thematic. As a result of this thesis was a CD with virtual project of Microregion Hranicko, manual for users and user-friendly installation pack. The results of this work have been used to make dozen of video sequences and printscreens which will be used for incoming atlas of Microregion Hranicko. With solutions like Google Earth and NASA worldwind, 3D real time visualization applications have reached global dimensions. Users around the world can navigate from space to street-level for any desired point on the planet. This development has significantly accelerated the next step into the third dimension of the GIS world. ArcGlobe and ArcGIS Explorer from ESRI, TerrainView Globe from ViewTec and Leica Virtual Explorer from Leica Geosystems represented some of the solutions that are currently available on the market. They are able to visualize very large amounts of data from local or remote resources. The data can be 2D like vector data and image data, but also digital terrain models and finally real 3D such as 3D models. The most important part of the thesis wasn't creation of the virtual project, but analysis of all possibilities that gives us Leica Virtual Explorer for future development and creation of 3D maps and virtual projects. First of all was necessary to find out all functions of Leica Virtual Explorer. As there is no Czech even English user manual so far, this part was really difficult, but not impossible. When all functions were discovered, the main part of the thesis could started. During creating virtual project I tried to test as much functions as possible and write down short manual for users. In my presentation I would like to show possibilities of Leica Virtual Explorer for 3D visualization.
