Free and open source software for GIS has been becoming one of respected tools in recent years. This kind of software also represents an excellent opportunity for universities to realize projects which are not in area of interest of software companies, but which are helpful and usually often used by end users all around the world. The aim of this paper is to describe such development that takes place at the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen (department of Geomatics). Common development tools and procedures will be described as well as examples of projects that we are working on. Example that will be mentioned is Open Cadastre project. It composes of two parts. First is a module for importing cadastral database to PostGIS and building geometric representation. The second part is a collection of tools for visualize both geometric and attribute information in a thin client using MapServer.
