Results from Geoinformation technologies challenges workshop
The workshop Geoinformation Technologie Challenges bring a lot of interesting impulses. I would like to summarize them in the following challenges for researchers and developers.
- Tomáš Mildorf has mentioned that there is a difference in model generalisation and cartographic generalization. The easy way how to keep data and model harmonised is to made cartographic generalization based on model generalization. What happen when the each generalization is done by different user with no connection. The challenge is how to make both results harmonized.
- Dan Bárta described problems with import Open Street Map data to general GIS software. He mentioned, that important part of the OSM database named relations is not in general imported into GIS software. So there is a challenge to improve tools for import. The most efficient would be improvement of tools that enable import to PostGIS.
- Another challenge connected with Open Street Map project is based on evaluation of data quality. Nowadays are not collisions so frequent, but in the future can happen that two or more users would like to upload data for the same feature. How to find who is correct, or how to use all the data to create the most suitable input.
- Challenge from the simplify field is connected with www.ogclite.org web site. The OGC standards are too complicated. The challenge is to simplify all important standards to be compatible with OGC standards, but enough simple to be simply implemented.
- With the previous challenge is connected another challenge. We can organize some kind of a competition where developers will try implement ogclite standard as fast as they can do without any existing GI libraries. That is probably a stupid challenge, but who cares, and who reads this page?
- Tomáš Brunclík bring another challenge. He has designed a process workflow for water quality analyses according to remote sensing data. The challenge is to take his workflow and describe it with some tools for orchestration (workflow management). There are several ways how to organize items in the designed workflows and the tools for workflow management can help with improvement of this order. Several types of ordering can be run on several independent data and results compared.
- Tomáš Kliment has mentioned that there must be simple ways how to create metadata according the INSPIRE requirements. I still do not fully understand why are not metadata created automatically. The challenge is to improve GIS/CAD tools to create basic metadata automatically. What metadata can be created automatically I have mentioned in some paper in 2008 year (if you are interested in this topic, just e-mail me and I will try to find the paper).
